History & Origin
Kateel's temple legend connects it to the goddess Durga's slaying of the demon Arunasura; tradition holds that the deity, first worshipped near Addoor, was later reinstalled at this river-island site.
Religious & Cultural Significance
Kateel is considered one of the holiest Durga shrines of coastal Karnataka and draws pilgrims from across the state, particularly for its distinctive practice - unique among Karnataka temples - of nine different Brahmin families performing the daily rituals in a fixed rotation.
Architecture
The temple follows traditional South Indian temple architecture, with an ornate gopuram and pillared mantapas, its sanctum reached across the river Nandini which encircles the temple islet.
Traditions
Ashlesha Bali, a snake-worship ritual, is performed regularly at the temple and draws devotees seeking relief from sarpa dosha.
