Sri Venkataramana Temple, Car Street
A nearly 300-year-old Vaishnava temple on Car Street in central Mangaluru, the principal shrine of the city's Gowd Saraswat Brahmin community and centre of the well-known Kodial Theru car festival.

History & Origin
A modest shrine was first built here in 1736; the temple's present presiding image of Sri Veera Venkatesha (Patta Devaru) was consecrated in 1804 after an idol carried by a wandering ascetic, left as loan collateral with a local merchant, was found to be an extraordinary murti of Lord Venkatesha.
Religious & Cultural Significance
The temple is the foremost Vaishnava shrine of Mangaluru's Gowd Saraswat Brahmin community, following Madhwa Vaishnava tradition, and its annual car festival - locally called Kodial Theru - is one of the city's major public celebrations, with a lineage going back over two centuries.
Architecture
The sanctum enshrines a roughly two-foot panchaloha image of Sri Veera Venkatesha in Vijayanagara style, along with images of Veera Vittala, Srinivasa, Gopalakrishna, Hayagriva and Naga Devaru; sub-shrines within the complex honour Ganesha, Hanuman, Garuda and Lakshmi.
Traditions
The temple's Brahmarathotsava (Kodial Theru) runs from Magha Shudda Tadige to Ashtami and is among Mangaluru's most attended annual festivals.
